When "The Pain" is so difficult to bear

A new series of seminars by Dr. Massimo Mangialavori, presented by Ianua Medica Amiata across three weekends in central London.

3 weekends · London · Oct 2026 – Mar 2027

About the series

"The Pain" — especially when it is intense, deep, and at times seemingly unbearable, leaving indelible marks on a person's life — is never merely a neurological problem.

Certain types of pain have profound and undeniable impacts on our system: on the physical level, shared by all human beings and primarily addressed by conventional medicine; on the corporal level, which is specific to each individual person, in the absolutely individual way of suffering that homeopathy seeks to address; and on the mental level, where complexity theory identifies the organising capacity inherent in every living system — autopoiesis — the intrinsic qualities that enable each organism to be itself.

In its many forms, "Pain" is the primary reason that leads a patient to seek medical advice. Often, when a patient becomes even partially aware of a more complex form of suffering, this leads to a search for a form of medicine that addresses it in all its complexity. Across the three meetings, we will explore the foundations and nuances of Dr. Mangialavori's personal approach in a space that a single seminar cannot provide.

The three seminars

Each seminar is offered both in person and online. Clinical cases are sent in advance and are not read aloud during the seminar — early registration is recommended.

Seminar 1

Loss and grief

24–25 October 2026

Loss and grief are among life's most profound and painful experiences, yet they receive surprisingly little attention in our repertories. Even in the most recent works, the section on Ailments following the death of a child lists fewer than twenty remedies. We will explore how each homeopathic family, and each individual remedy, encounters and expresses loss and grief in its own unique way.

Seminar 2

Chronic Pain and Protopathic Pain

16–17 January 2027

Chronic pain profoundly affects daily life and often overshadows the underlying condition that gives rise to it. 'Protopathic pain' — a term Dr. Mangialavori coined years ago — describes pain that is so intense and so early that those who experience it cannot represent it, give it colour, or visualise it: infants and very young children who feel intense discomfort but cannot articulate where or how it hurts. Many such pains, treated in literature as acute, in their constitutional form reflect deeply chronic suffering.

Seminar 3

The denial of pain

13–14 March 2027

Denying pain is a common adaptive response when an organism perceives suffering as unmanageable — relegating it not only into the hidden space of consciousness but into the body itself. In medical terms this symptomatology is known as scotomisation, where dark areas appear in the visual field, obstructing complete vision. It is a process of exclusion, removal and denial that is no less significant than the pain that is openly expressed.

Seminar content & audience

The best-known remedies for each theme will be discussed with a focus on differential diagnoses, to clearly distinguish them from remedies with which they may be confused. Most space will be devoted to lesser-known remedies that nonetheless play an important role in Dr. Mangialavori's forty years of clinical experience. Each remedy will be presented with at least one clinical case, ranging from paediatric patients to adolescents, adults, and the elderly.
